Sex Change - Male to Female
Thanksgiving Day in 1995 was the last time our family was
to spend together. The season was full of surprises and I was on a path to
becoming a part time Christian missionary, planning a summer event in 1996 (or
so I told my family) to China. My two older half-brothers, having another dad,
were never at peace with each other and this day was no different. However,
recently, my oldest brother called me and told the reasons for his decision to
have a sex change.
This news was a shocker because I had never known this side of
my brother, I was 29 and he was 32. Growing up very different lives, all of us
never knew each other well. Though I contribute the decision to taking too much
acid when he was young, he has his proof of an additional chromosome: XXY
syndrome is a condition in which human males have an extra X chromosome.
Though my brother had no external symptoms and was able to reproduce (having two
children with women); his psychological mindset was greatly hindered by keeping
this secret.
At least one study indicates that planned and timed support
should be provided for young men with Klinefelter syndrome to ameliorate current
poor psychosocial outcomes.
The lack of family knowledge, and our mother’s secret, added to
my disbelief and confusion. On the three-hour ride to Thanksgiving dinner, I
told my other brother the news. He was not surprised.
Sex changes do not change a person’s identity inside; they
remain the same. I do not judge him or anyone for decisions they make when those
decisions only impact themselves. However, this decision to have a sex change
needed professional guidance, to which our family never sought. The evidence to
his decision was clear view of new breasts…
I always thought of my brother as a hardheaded asshole, but now
he is just my sister.
And so introduces the
sex change of my oldest brother...XXY or XYY?
